Other countries in continental Europe on request, for example Switzerland, Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Portugal, Finland, Greece, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Luxembourg and Romania.

How to plan a long-distance move

  1. Step 1

Get in touch as soon as your handover date is fixed

On long routes, the truck can be on the road for more than a day. If you get in touch early, you have more choice of dates and can coordinate your notice period, apartment handover and moving day properly.

  2. Step 2

    Describe both addresses in detail

Floor, lift and the walking distance to the door matter at the destination just as much as in Berlin. Also let us know whether the truck can stop right outside your new home or whether there is a narrow old-town lane in the way.

  3. Step 3

An inventory instead of a guess

A short list of the large items (wardrobes, beds, sofa, washing machine) and a rough number of boxes is enough. From that we can see how much load space your move needs and whether a part-load move is an option.

  4. Step 4

    Check parking at the destination

Rules on stopping and parking for moving trucks vary from city to city and from country to country. Ask the local authority at your destination whether a permit is needed.

  5. Step 5

    Bridge the gap

If your new home is not available yet, your furniture can be stored with us until you can move in.

Part-load moves: when you only need part of the truck

Not every long-distance move fills a whole truck. If you only want to take a room in a shared apartment, a few pieces of furniture or a handful of boxes to another city, you can ask for a part-load move: your things then travel together with another job.

The catch is the date. A part-load move follows the shared route, so you need a few days of flexibility for collection and delivery. After your request, we will check whether a suitable trip on your route is coming up.

Moving abroad: what to sort out beforehand

Within the EU

Between EU countries there is no customs clearance for household goods. Registration paperwork matters more: anyone who moves away from Germany and does not keep a home here deregisters at the Bürgeramt (citizens' office) within two weeks of moving out (Section 17 of the Federal Registration Act, Bundesmeldegesetz). How you register in your new country is decided by the authorities there.

Norway and Switzerland: customs border

Norway and Switzerland are not part of the EU. At the border, household goods must be declared to customs before they can enter the country. The customs authorities explain when they are duty-free and which forms apply: in Norway, Tolletaten on toll.no; in Switzerland, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG).

Plan for this before moving day and draw up an inventory: number your boxes, note roughly what is in them and list larger furniture item by item. Please mention the destination country in your request.

This information does not replace customs advice. The current information from the relevant authorities always takes precedence.

Services you can add to your move

  • Packing materials and packing, so nothing shifts on the long journey
  • Dismantling furniture in Berlin and reassembling it at the destination
  • Dismantling and reassembling your kitchen
  • Storage, if your new home is not available yet
  • Having bulky waste (Sperrmüll) and old furniture taken away before the move

Questions about long-distance moving

Which countries do you move to?

Alongside moves within Germany, we also handle moves to destinations including Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Spain, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. For other destinations in continental Europe, mention them in your request and we will confirm availability and timing.

What is a part-load move?

With a part-load move, your furniture travels in the same truck as another job. This works best for a few pieces of furniture or a small apartment. However, you need some flexibility on dates, because the trip follows the shared route. After your request, we will tell you whether a part-load move is possible on your route.

Do I need customs papers for a move to Norway?

Norway is not a member of the European Union. Household goods must therefore be declared to Norwegian customs on entry. The Norwegian Customs Service (Tolletaten) explains on toll.no under which conditions they remain free of duties and taxes and which form applies. Sort this out before moving day and have an inventory of your boxes and furniture ready.

How early should I request a long-distance move?

Ideally as soon as the date for handing over your apartment is fixed. Long routes can tie up the truck and crew for several days, so early requests are easier to schedule than short-notice ones.

What does the price of a long-distance move depend on?

Mainly on the amount of furniture and boxes, the distance, the floors and walking distances at both addresses, and whether you add packing or assembly. We give you the binding final price before you commit.

Do I have to deregister when I move abroad?

Yes. Anyone who moves away from Germany and does not keep a home here must deregister with the registration office (Meldebehörde) within two weeks of moving out; in Berlin this is done at the Bürgeramt (citizens' office). See Section 17 of the Federal Registration Act (Bundesmeldegesetz).
